Volusia County Schools Announces New School Year Updates

As Volusia County Schools continues to prepare for Back to School, there are several important updates to share:

-Deadline for pre-registration extended, more Parent Information Sessions scheduled.
-Dual Enrollment opportunities expanded.
-Athletics practices delayed until Aug. 24.

Pre-registration deadline extended to noon Thursday; new Parent Information Sessions added, including two in Spanish
The start of the 2020-2021 student school year is set for Monday, Aug. 31. VCS has extended the deadline for parents/guardians to fill out the pre-registration form expressing the best Learning Option for their children until noon Thursday, July 30. In addition, more virtual Parent Information Sessions regarding the fall school reopening plan have been added today (July 27) and Wednesday, including two sessions in Spanish and three sessions for students in ESE, gifted, or who have a 504 plan.

Families should review the three Learning Options available to make the best decision for their children. To help VCS properly plan, parents and guardians are asked to complete a pre-registration form for each child enrolled in VCS no later than noon Thursday. The form is available on the Reopening Roadmap 2020-2021: www.vcsedu.org/reopening-roadmap.

The three Learning Options are:

Traditional Classroom Setting
Volusia Live (real-time live streaming)
Enhanced Volusia Online Learning

To participate in the virtual Parent Information Sessions, parents/guardians should download the Teams app. Please plan to join the specific meeting just before start time using the links on the Reopening Roadmap website: https://www.vcsedu.org/reopening-roadmap/parent-information-sessions

This week’s sessions are:

4-5 p.m. Monday, July 27 (by level – elementary, middle, and high school)
5-6 p.m. Monday, July 27 (in Spanish – all levels)
7-8 p.m. Monday (by level – elementary, middle, and high school)
10-11 a.m. Tuesday (for ESE, gifted and 504 plans)
10-11 a.m. Wednesday (in Spanish – all levels)
6-7 p.m. Wednesday (for ESE, gifted and 504 plans)
7-8 p.m. Wednesday (by level – elementary, middle, and high school)
8-9 a.m. Thursday (for ESE, gifted, and 504 plans)

Parents only need to attend one session per level (elementary, middle, or high school).

Dual Enrollment Expanded; deadline to register is now Aug. 14
VCS and Daytona State College are expanding Dual Enrollment opportunities for middle and high school students. This includes the availability for returning dual-enrolled students to take up to four classes online. The registration deadline for Fall 2020 has been extended to Friday, Aug. 14.

In addition, the 7-period day requirements for Dual Enrollment students have been adjusted to provide greater flexibility to students. Students taking three college credit hours must have a minimum of five middle/high school courses. Students taking four or five college credit hours must have a minimum of four middle/high school courses. Students taking six college credit hours must have a minimum of three middle/high school courses. Students taking seven or eight college credit hours must have a minimum of two middle/high school courses. Students taking nine, 10 or 11 college credit hours must have a minimum of one middle/high school course. Students taking 12 to 15 college credit hours are not required to take any middle/high school courses.

Note: 15 credit hours are the maximum allowed, except for graduating seniors who need an extra course to meet AA requirements.

FHSAA delays fall sports season until Aug. 24
The Florida High School Athletic Association has voted to delay the start of fall sports, including athletic practices, until Aug. 24. Conditioning will continue based on guidelines set for Phase 1.

These guidelines pertain to FHSAA fall sports – football, sideline cheer, girls’ volleyball, cross country, swimming, bowling, and golf. Any questions regarding a specific sport should be directed to the athletic director at the student-athlete’s school.
