WUCF is re-imagining their annual Be My Neighbor Day event this year by celebrating kindness throughout the month of February with a Daniel Tiger TV special, online kindness kit activities and virtual events.
In GRR-IFIC Neighbors with Daniel Tiger!, airing Saturday and Sunday, February 27 and 28 at 8:30 and 10 a.m., viewers join Daniel Tiger and his friends as they celebrate what it means to be a caring neighbor with music, story time and at-home activities.
Kicking off February 1, fans can download or pick up a kindness kit that includes seven at-home activities for celebrating kindness and what it means to be a caring neighbor. Activities include Mom Tiger’s Banana Bread, a Firefighter Sticker Scene, Thank You Cards, Music Dance Party Mini Drum, Taking Care of Me Yoga, Story Time Theatre and Grow a Butterfly Garden. Kindness kits can be printed at home or picked up at a local library, while supplies last. Visit wucf.org/bemyneighborday to print the kit or find out a location for pick up.
WUCF will host two live interactive Virtual LIVE PBS KIDS time events that explore the world using the senses on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. and Saturday, Feb. 13 at 10 a.m. Both sessions are the same and include videos and a lot of hands-on fun. A downloadable participant kit is available that includes gather at home materials and printables for the event. Registration is required by signing up at wucf.org/events.
“Even if we can’t be out interacting with the community for Be My Neighbor Day as we normally do, WUCF is happy to continue sharing Daniel Tiger’s message on how to be a caring neighbor and sharing kindness through our locally-produced show, virtual events and activities,” said Dr. Phil Hoffman, WUCF’s executive director. “As Central Florida Storytellers, WUCF continues to encourage curiosity and learning through our virtual Be My Neighbor Day event.”
Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is one of PBS’ most popular animated programs and airs weekdays at 10 a.m. and on weekends at 7:30 a.m. on WUCF. The program builds on the pioneering PBS series, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, and is produced by Fred Rogers Productions. The series tells engaging stories about the life of a preschooler using musical strategies grounded in Rogers’ landmark social-emotional curriculum. Through imagination, creativity and music, Daniel and his friends learn the key social skills necessary for school and life.
WUCF will not be hosting an in-person event in Winter Park’s Central Park due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
WUCF could not make GRR-IFIC Neighbors with Daniel Tiger!, Be My Neighbor Day or the virtual events successful without the additional support from Fred Rogers Productions, PNC Grow Up Great®, and The Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation.
Visit wucf.org/bemyneighborday for show information, downloadable activities and explore the Fred Rogers connection to Central Florida in WUCF’s documentary, Mister Rogers In Our Neighborhood.
