Volusia County Schools is adding three schools – Coronado Beach Elementary, Ortona Elementary, and Ormond Beach Elementary – to its Afterschool Meals Program, effective Monday, October 5.
The Afterschool Meals Program provides free, nutritious meals to students at schools with a free and reduced meals percentage of at least 50% that also have after-school programs with supervised enrichment programs or activities. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is administered in Florida by the Department of Health, Bureau of Child Care Food Programs.
Students must be enrolled in an enrichment program, such as Extended Day, Tutoring, School Clubs, Athletic programs at an eligible school to receive a supper meal.
Two types of meals are offered: a traditional hot meal, or a grab-and-go meal, called a Power Pack. The type of meal at each school depends on the type of school program and the available staff.
With the three new schools added, VCS now has 41 elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools participating in the Afterschool Meals Program.
