With the coronavirus pandemic in full swing and a non-traditional summer on the way, youth librarian Carly Ries was determined to find a way to keep children reading and engaged during the summer vacation. She came up with an innovative solution: Prepare “Lit Kits to Go” for children entering grades K-5.
Youth librarians from all 14 branches of the Volusia County Public Library jumped on board and developed a plan to distribute customized kits that include age-appropriate books, crafts and other educational activities. Since then, the branches have distributed the free kits to more than 700 children.
The Northeast Florida Library Information Network took notice and presented the library system its 2020 Innovation Award, which recognizes innovative programs that made an impact on the community.
“Studies show that easy access to books during the summer can reduce a loss in reading skills from one school year to the next,” said Library Services Director Lucinda Colee. “And this program was the perfect solution to keep children engaged during the pandemic. I’m very proud of our staff for thinking outside the box and reaching out to our young patrons.”
The kits are still available. Parents can check out a Lit Kit to Go bag each week by filling out a form at their local branch or on volusialibrary.org. A library card is required for the Lit Kit to Go bags to include library books.
