The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has been named Volusia County Schools’ Business Partner of the Year and recipient of the Department of Education’s Commissioner’s Business Recognition Award (CBRA). The award will be presented to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office during the Florida Chamber Foundation’s Learners to Earners Education Summit on June 18 in Orlando.
The goal of CBRA is to recognize Florida’s business leaders and partners that have shown outstanding commitment to bringing positive change and implementing bold, innovative approaches to improve academic performance of students in Florida’s education system and communities. Volusia’s recipient was selected by a district committee from 36 nominations submitted by schools and departments in March.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has provided outstanding support to the School District of Volusia County’s criminal justice programs since 2012. Because of the VCSO’s generosity, our schools have been provided with thousands of dollars’ worth of donated equipment including a patrol vehicle, handcuffs, fingerprint equipment for teaching CSI forensics, and radar units for measuring speed. Specifically, the equipment that each high school criminal justice program has received has been used for authentic real-life learning.
Deputies regularly join classes and assist in lesson presentation, skills instruction, and project reviews to share their experiences. They also work diligently to coordinate job shadowing opportunities for high school seniors and build an important rapport between law enforcement and the young people of our community.
