Volusia County Schools Offers Drivers Education Courses

Registration for the fall semester Drivers Education program begins on Thursday, August 23 at all high schools. Registration forms can be picked up from each high school’s guidance department beginning Wednesday, August 22 — actual registration begins on August 23. Students interested in earning credit in Drivers Education must register in the guidance office at their home high school. There is no fee for the program, and students will earn a half-credit elective credit and a paperless waiver of the road test for an operator’s license. Drivers Education brochures are available in each high school’s guidance department. Students must have their learners permit in hand when registering.

The after school program will begin on September 6, 2018 and will run through December 13, 2018 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There will be no classes on Thursday, November 22.

The program will tentatively be offered at the following three high schools:

· Atlantic High, 1250 Reed Canal Road, Port Orange

· DeLand High, 800 North Hill Avenue, DeLand (Monday and Tuesday class)

· University High, 1000 West Rhode Island Avenue, Orange City

The Saturday program will begin on September 8, 2018 and will run through November 3, 2018 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will need to bring lunch each day and wear closed toe shoes.

The program will tentatively be offered at the following three high schools:

· New Smyrna Beach High, 1015 Tenth Street, New Smyrna Beach

· Pine Ridge High, 925 Howland Boulevard, Deltona

· Seabreeze High, 2700 North Oleander Avenue, Daytona Beach

Eligibility requirements:

· All students currently enrolled in a Volusia County public school, school of choice, private school, or who are in the home-school program, and who are eligible to drive will be given the opportunity to enroll in a Drivers Education program as seats are available. Students are to register at their zoned high school.

· Must be 15 years or older on or before the first day of the session for which the student is enrolled.

· Must have completed one full year of high school on or before the first day of the session.

· Must have and present a restricted license/learner’s permit when registering and on the first day of the session for which the student is enrolled.

· Must not have already received credit for Drivers Education.

Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. If the class meets the enrollment capacity, a waiting list will be started. Funding for this program is made available through the Dori Slosberg Driver Education Trust Fund. No district funds will be used to fund this program.
